British filmmaker Ritchie has only met the little girl once before in 2006,but quickly warmed to her.
A friend told the Daily Mail: "He has nicknamed her Koala,as she has this habit of clinging to people and not wanting to let go."
Later,he joined Madonna and their whole family at a Kabbalah service. Mercy's sister Lourdes is said to have provided another motivation for the couple to put their divorce behind them.
Lourdes,12,loves Ritchie and begged them to mend fences."She hated the fact that they were having a go at each other in the press,"said the source."She told them to stop it. Since then Madonna has been making a real effort."

Madonna is planning to take daughter Mercy James to see the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. Madge recently adopted four-year-old toddler Mercy James from Malawi, and now it is she wants to take the youngster to see the wall as an introduction to her Jewish faith Kaballah.
The trip has reportedly been planned around the final date of the star's Sticky And Sweet tour in Tel Aviv in three months' time. A source said: "Madge wants to give Mercy enough time to settle in to her new home. "By September, she feels she will be ready to take the trip without danger of upheaval. "The Wailing Wall is a very sacred place for anyone with links to the Jewish faith and she wants all the children to see it."

Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow Making a go at Decorating Baby Bedroom in Prep For Mercy James
Madonna has asked Gwyneth Paltrow for help as she decorates a bedroom for newly adopted daughter Mercy James. The 50-year-old singer will soon be allowed to bring the four-year-old Malawian orphan to her home in New York, and she has reportedly been getting the room ready for her.
A source said: "Madge wants Mercy to feel like a little princess when she arrives. Gwyneth has a home in the Hamptons area of New York and Madonna was so impressed with her daughter Apple's room that she asked Gwyneth to help her kit out Mercy's new bedroom. "As well as all the items inside, she's also commissioned a mini Georgian-style treehouse for Mercy and David in her garden. She's been filling Mercy's wardrobe at the same time. "She's stocked up on cashmere sweaters, dresses and silk tunics and has had a new charm bracelet made for her. It features a miniature bell, a Statue of Liberty, a map of Africa and lockets with photos of everyone in her new family." It is claimed Madonna's eldest daughter Lourdes has also been buying gifts for her new sister. The source added: "Lourdes is beside herself with excitement about her new sister. She's really looking forward to having a little girl in the house she can care for. "She's bought piles of leggings, hipster T-shirts, tutus and trainers for the new arrival."

Madonna plans to meet Jesus' family as Mercy's arrival nears
As Madonna turns the page on the next chapter of her life, she is apparently gearing up to meet her 22-year-old boyfriend Jesus Luz's parents in Brazil for the first time.
"She feels it is time to meet his family, the age difference isn't an issue and she has already bought some gifts to take," says a source close to the 50-year-old singer.
It also emerged this week that Madonna makes daily phone calls to her new daughter Mercy James in Africa while aides arrange travel papers for the four-year-old to take a private jet to New York..
Following Friday's Malawi high court ruling that Madonna is permitted to bring four year old Mercy home with her to the US,preparations for the little girl's arrival are reportedly underway.
After official paperwork has been organised by the singer's lawyer,little Mercy James,who has apparently spent the last two months under care of officials at Raising Malawi - a charity founded by Madonna to support orphans, is expected to board a private jet to New York where new siblings Lourdes, 12,Rocco,8,and David,3,will be waiting to welcome her into their ever increasing family.
Meanwhile, Mercy's 24-year-old security guard father James Kambewa has requested that the young child be brought up knowing that he is her biological father.
"I am asking Madonna to make sure that, while the child is growing,she really must know that while she is far away her father is still alive.
